TSKK FOUNDING MEMBER'S DEMISE
Excerpts from http://www.goacom.com/joel/news/2007/oct/16oct07.htm

On 14 October, at 7.30 p.m. Fr Moreno de Souza, S.J., a founding member and the first Executive Director of Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr, left this world for his heavenly abode. Fr. Moreno de Souza, S.J., a pillar of Konknni, was born on 3 November 1923 at Pilerne at his mother’s house; his father was from Marna, Siolim. But later they shifted to Pilerne permanently. In 1944, he joined the Society of Jesus and did his priestly training in Mumbai, Shembaganur (Tamil Nadu), Ranchi, Belgaum, Granada and Salamanca in Spain, before being ordained priest on 15 July 1958 in Granada, Spain.

Fr Moreno loved his mother tongue Konknni very ardently. His two maternal uncles were priests and musicians, which made him take interest in composing songs, hymns and poetry. He knew Latin, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalina, Marathi, Tamil and Hindi. Soon after his ordination he regularly started contributing to ‘Aitarachem Vachop’, a Konknni weekly of Salesian priests, and later contributed to ‘Udentechem Neketr’, a weekly from Bombay, and also to 'Vavraddeancho Ixtt'.

The people of Ranchi inspired him to write religious songs in Konknni when he heard adivasi Christians singing hymns in Hindi. Fr Moreno rendered invaluable service to the Konknni monthly 'Dor Mhoineachi Rotti' for 42 long years, keeping the magazine alive to date. 'Rotti' was first started at Karachi in 1915. In 1960, its office was shifted to Bombay. Fr. Moreno was posted at Bom Jesus Basilica, Old Goa, and the responsibility of this magazine was handed over to him. From August 2006, however, this magazine was entrusted to Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr, Porvorim.

He made himself a historian by dint of hardwork. His outstanding and praiseworthy work comprise the four invaluable volumes on the churches of Goa, namely 'Tisvaddecheo Igorzo', 'Bardescheo Igorzo', and 'Saxtticheo Igorzo' (two volumes). He has around about 19 Konkani books in Konknni. On 23 September 2007, his last book 'Saxtticheo Igorzo' (Dusro Khondd) covering the Churches of Salcette was released.

He has written innumerable Konknni articles published in 'Vavaraddeancho Ixtt', 'Gulab', 'The Goan Review', 'Goencho Avaz', etc. He has written a number of articles in English on Konknni language, literature and culture. Besides, he has served Konknni people through his preaching in various churches in Goa and outside Goa. He was a member of All India Sahitya Academy, New Delhi, Dalgado Konknni Akademi and Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr.

Senior Tiatrist Prem Kumar passes away
NT News Desk

Panaji, Oct 12 The Dalgado Konknni Akademy today mourned the death of veteran Konkani Tiatrist, Prem Kumar, who passed away today in Mumbai. In a press release, the DKA chief, Mr Tomazinho Cardozo said, “In almost 55 years of active association with the Tiatr stage, he produced about 50 Tiatrs which have created a lasting impression on the minds of the audience. His masterpieces include ‘Vavraddi’, ‘Rinn’, ‘Dukh’, ‘Kakut’, ‘Jivit Ek Sopon’, ‘Konnank Mhunnonk Maim’, ‘Abdul Narayan D’Souza’, ‘Ordhi Bakhri’, ‘Jawan’ and ‘Peleache Vostuchi Axea Korum Naie’.’’

Born in Chandor as Peter D’Costa, Prem Kumar based his Tiatrs on various themes relevant to the society at that time. He highlighted various social issues, patriotism and importance of communal harmony through his Tiatrs. Goa and the Goan identity always had a prominent place in his plays.
Besides acting, stage movements, actors’ expressions and reactions, he concentrated equally on stage settings and light effects to beautify the performance of the Tiatr.

Apart from Tiatr, he enacted several small roles in Hindi films like ‘Mera Salam’, ‘Bandish’, ‘Shaukeen’, ‘Hum Bhi Insan Hai’, ‘Sakhi’ and ‘Bahadur’ Prem also acted in Konkani film ‘Boglantt’ as hero, which had Goan and Mangalorean actors. In May this year, the DKA honoured him by conferring on him ‘Mons. Dalgado Puroskar’ for his lifetime contribution to Tiatr, said the press note
